Clare Rusbridge

Her interest in veterinary work goes back along way. Clare claims that wanting to be a veterinary surgeon is one of her earliest memories.

She graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1991 and then completed a small animal internship at the University of Pennsylvania in 1992 - where she also undertook a clinical study on Haemophilia C in Kerry Blue Terriers.

She went on to spent a year in a general small animal practice in Cambridgeshire.

In 1993 she joined the Royal Veterinary College, completing a BSAVA/Petsavers residency in Neurology and Neurosurgery, and a further year as a Staff Clinician in Neurology. During this period she was awarded the 'Fudge Crisp' Senior Resident Award and in 1996 she was board-certified by the European College of Veterinary Neurology.

Since August 1997 she has offered a referral service from Stone Lion Veterinary Centre for the diagnosis and treatment of small animal neurological disorders.

Clare has established links with Atkinson Morley Hospital (a specialist neurology hospital) where she attends and contributes veterinary material to the hospital's weekly neuropathology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery and medical neurology meetings. Clare feels that in addition to the improvements in her own clinical ability, the consultants also benefit from comparative neurology. The relationship has led to Clare's involvement in a number of clinical projects.

Services available include:

  • Neuromuscular disorder workups in canines and felines
  • Epilepsy
  • Neurosurgery
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
  • CT scans
  • EEG (electroencephalography)
  • Myelography
  • CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) analysis

Special interests

Clare has a particular interest in epilepsy, the treatment of which she finds particularly rewarding. She is associated with the Phyllis Croft Foundation.

She also enjoys her feline neurology cases as she feels this is a neglected area. (She also happens to have a soft spot for cats!).

CNS infections is an area Clare had to do much research into prior to writing a chapter on the subject for inclusion in the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Infectious Diseases. This project stimulated a more specific interest in this area.

Developments in the use of MRI are exciting: Clare will be speaking at the International MRI Forum.

Lastly, Clare has a interest in neuromuscular diseases.

Research Interests:

  • Chiari-type malformation and Syringohydromyelia in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
  • Caudal Cervical Spondylomyelopathy (Wobblers Syndrome)
  • Canine Neosporosis
  • Vertebral Myeloma
  • Feline CNS Lymphoma

Clare Rusbridge has an extensive list of publications.

She wrote a chapter on neurological infections for the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Infectious Diseases - as mentioned above.

  • Vertebral plasma cell tumours
  • Cervical spondylomyelopathy
